People who have been exploring the world of Dawngate, EA’s first free-to-play MOBA title, may not be excited about today’s news. In an announcement at the game’s website, Matt Bromberg, Group General Manager at EA, announced the shutdown of Dawngate, the multiplayer online battle arena title which has been available for almost a year and a half.
“Dawngate has been in beta for almost 18 months, including a full open beta for the past six months. Through that time, we’ve taken a lot of feedback from players and delivered lots of new features and innovations. And although the game has grown, we’re not seeing the progress we’d hoped for. This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but beta testing is about learning and improving, and ultimately, about making difficult decisions about how to proceed.”
With the popularity of such games as League of Legends (seen on TV via ESPN) and DOTA 2, the lack of progress in the eyes of the developer and players was the main reason for the closure of the online game.
“Through that time, we’ve taken a lot of feedback from players and delivered lots of new features and innovations. And although the game has grown, we’re not seeing the progress we’d hoped for,” mentioned Bromberg. “This isn’t the outcome we wanted, but beta testing is about learning and improving, and ultimately, about making difficult decisions about how to proceed.”
Dawngate will be available for the next 90 days, and players will receive a full refund for expenses during the beta period.
