Attorneys at the Department of Justice are about to make the recommendation of blocking the Comcast-Time Warner merger, sources told Bloomberg.com today.
For the state attorneys, sources say, the $45.2 billion Comcast plan to purchase Time Warner would harm consumers. The final decision will be made by senior officials at the antitrust division of the US Department of Justice.
Sena Fitzmaurice, a Comcast spokeswoman, said there is “no basis for a lawsuit to block the transaction” and that the merger “will result in significant consumer benefits.”
According to the article, there are three important issues at stake for regulators in this mega-deal: “whether the combined entity would have too much control over nationwide broadband Internet delivery, whether a cable giant could use its financial influence to strike exclusive cable deals that could keep programming off of other platforms and whether it could limit how programming is delivered through video streaming services,” a source said.
Comcast has already expanaded by purchasing NBCUniversal in 2013.
