With only a few days away of releasing its DSi XL, Nintendo has announced it will launch a new portable console later this year or early next year. Known as the Nintendo 3DS, it will be capable of displaying 3D effects without the use of special glasses. While not much else has been revealed by the company (other than it will be backward compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi games), a few other web sites have mentioned other features the portable gaming console will have and believe it will have. Over at Nikkei.com, an article states Nintendo is planning on giving the 3DS capabilities such as a 3D joystick and force feedback mechanism. At Kotaku.com, a post says the portable console will “use those [DSi] cameras to track the movement of the handheld and/or the player.”

Nintendo is creating its own path to the 3D world of gaming. Sony, ESPN and some movie studios are also becoming  early adopters of this born-again technology, thanks in part to the success of the movie Avatar. What will Nintendo tell us (and show us) at this year’s E3? We’ll have to wait and see.
