The Onlive gaming service has finally made its debut, and players can now experience what this new type of service is all about.

OnLive is a cloud gaming service. It’s similar to what you’ve seen on Steam, GameTap or Games for Windows: there is a game store, and we can have your own profiles. For now, the lineup is small, but the amount of games will eventually grow. What makes this service one-of-a-kind is the way we all have access to the games. To enter into the service, either a downloadable software client or a micro-console is needed. If you choose the PC/Mac route, gamers can play their games via their PC after the client installation.

To play games via the cloud, the net connection has to be fast (over 5mbps recommended). At least your PCs won’t need state-of-the-art motherboards and/or processor to play the games you want.

When I began playing some demos, I noticed the gameplay has virtually no lagging whatsoever. It was perhaps the coolest thing I’ve seen. Because I had become a founding member, I recevied a coupon for access to a full game of my choice. I chose Assassin’s Creed 2. Once I starting playing the game, I felt like I was playing a game in someone’s somewhat powerful PC. After some minutes, I forgot I was playing in a server-based service. It was much faster than entering a dvd in to the drive and click play to start a game.

One noticeable drawback was the graphics. It seemed like I was playing  a game on an old TV. Though the animation was excellent, the graphics quality was not really what I was hoping for. But also, any gamer would prefer a game with no lagging with low-quality graphics than a slow game with perfect scenes.

I did get an error with my Logitech controller. I was unable to move anywhere. I couldn’t play the very beginning of the game until I made a few changes in settings. Xbox 360 users should have no problem though.

Another cool feature was spectator mode: watching other gamers play their favorite games. There are 23 games in the initial lineup.

Perhaps the only reason most people will say “no” to OnLive may be the way users get access to the games. Because you play “on the cloud,” the games are not downloaded to a user’s PC or Mac, the games are in the OnLive servers. So, if you “buy a game” (or in other words, if you “buy access to a game”), you will not be able to play it after you longer want to continue with OnLive. If gamers had a right to download the game, things would be different. That is the main problem with OnLive.

While it may be a competition for Steam and Games for Windows, gamers will have the final say about OnLive’s success. It’s a great service indeed, but with one major drawback.

Yo no podía moverme a alguna parte.
