WhatsApp, the mobile messaging service recently acquired by Facebook for US$19 billion, started facing problems with its servers earlier this afternoon. Many users’s messages are not being sent, while others just can’t sign up.
One of the latest post on its Twitter account describes what is happening with WhatsApp:
sorry we currently experiencing server issues. we hope to be back up and recovered shortly.

The last time the service had problems was back in December 7th.
#WhatsApp has become a trending topic this week on Twitter first due to the purchase of WhatsApp by Facebook and recently today due to server problems affecting everyone around the world, especially in Europe.
Competing service Telegram is trying to avoid the same problem as WhatsApp’s. Over 100 users a second are singning up, and therefore slowing down the service.
This is crazy. We'are getting 100 new registrations every second. Trying hard to prevent connection issues in Europe.

[Update]: It’s back!
