The Nintendo 3DS XL model has not been on the shelves as long as the original 3DS, but in Japan, the 3DS XL model won’t be seeing the light of day in the near future.
On the Japanese site of Nintendo, the 3DS hardware color page shows a message stating the production of the 3DS XL model (known in Japan as the 3DS LL model) in its various colors, is ending soon. It seems the New Nintendo 3DS XL will become the default XL/LL device to buy. No specific date was mentioned about the end of production of the 3DS XL, nor if this model will be discontinued outside of Japan. As of now, the New Nintendo 3DS XL is available only in Japan and Australia.
The original 3DS model has not been affected by the company’s decision.
Since the successful October 2014 launch of the New Nintendo 3DS XL in Japan, it seems there won’t be a need for a regular 3DS XL model. The New Nintendo 3DS models will let people play regular Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS titles.
