Cortana, Microsoft’s personal assistant with a current presence in Windows Phone devices and the Windows 10 Technical Preview, will also make its way into Android and iOS devices as a standalone app, sometime after the launch of Windows 10 this year, sources with knowledge about the artificial intelligence project named Einstein said.
Since the arrival of the company’s latest CEO, Satya Nadella, the focus has become to bring the best of Microsoft software to different devices, including taking them to competing mobile operating systems. Microsoft has already released its email software Outlook and its productivity software suite Office on Google and Apple devices.
People familiar with Cortana should recognize the voice of the artificial intelligence companion seen in Halo games. The voice of the female character in the game is also the one used for the personal assistant.
In a conversation with Reuters, Eric Horvitz, the managing director of Microsoft Research also involved in the Einstein project, refused to say anything about Cortana on non-Microsoft devices, but said “this kind of technology, which can read and understand email, will play a central role in the next roll out of Cortana, which we are working on now for the fall time frame.”
