Today is a special day for gamers who sat in the couch or desk in front of their TVs to play one memorable videogame that would unite characters from various franchises to battle it out as Super Smash Bros. celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The first title in the franchise, Super Smash Bros., made its debut on January 22, 1999, in Japan for the Nintendo 64, and later on in other continents, (North America on April 26, 1999, and Europe on November 19, 1999).
The following message appeared on the official Super Smash Bros. page on Facebook:
SSB game director Masahiro Sakurai also shared a message via Twitter: “Today is the 20th anniversary of Super Smash Bros. I’ve seen so many people enjoy this series in so many ways – at home, at hangouts, at conventions, even in business offices! Development has always been hard on me, but I’m supremely happy. Thank you so much for playing.”
