SNK announced its upcoming 3-on-3 fighting game The King of Fighters XV is coming worldwide on February 17, 2022, for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
KOF XV takes place six years after the events in the previous title KOF XIV.
Once the game launches, there will be 39 fighters to choose from. In addition, there will 2 DLC teams composed of three characters each which will be available sometime after launch. With the amount of characters, it makes sense to bring all past heroes into KOF XV, including the heroes from the Orochi, NESTS, and Ash Sagas. The events from KOF XIV will continue in KOF XV with Story mode.
A new addition to the battle system is the Shatter Strike. According to SNK, it’s “a new mechanic that enables players to counter enemy attacks.” To compliment the new Shatter Strike, an improved Max mode and Max Code (Quick) are included, along with the Rush function. That function lets players do combos “by rapidly pressing attack buttons.”
To make the game more joyful, KOF XV will include a DJ Station with 300 songs from the franchise. Fans will be able to pick their favorite tracks when it’s time to play.
For the ones who enjoy online play, SNK is including various features such as Ranked Match, Casual Match, Room Match, and Online Training. SNK is also introducing the new Draft Vs mode. It “pits you against an opponent as you try to nab your favorite character before they can.”
The Gallery feature will allow fans to listen to character voices and watch the in-game cinematics. An animated short directed by renowned Masami Obari will also be included. Obari was the director for the 1994 animated film Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture. He was also the character designer for the Fatal Fury films from 1992-1994.
Over in Japan, fans can already pre-purchase artwork and soundtracks between now and November 30 at https://www.snk- onlineshop.com/item_list.html?category_cd=KOFXV. SNK is also offering a special package that includes the Standard PS4/PS5 version of KOF XV along with an original postcard and reversible jacket, only in Japan.
What remains to be known is who are the 12 characters yet to be announced. The last one before this big announcement was Antonov.
