During the “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma” developer video, game director Hideaki Itsuno announced the sequel, called Dragon’s Dogma 2, is already in development.
In the video, Itsuno described how traditional pen-and-paper role-playing games first exposed him to the high fantasy genre and RPGs in general at the start of the 12-minute development video.
After being moved by these early experiences, Itsuno went on to discover a love for arcade and action games, especially the fighting genre with Capcom’s Street Fighter II. Itsuno had already produced a number of games for Capcom’s arcade business by the year 2000, and he had also started putting the initial ideas for the game that would eventually become Dragon’s Dogma. Itsuno was tasked with finishing the creation of Devil May Cry 2, as well as its sequels Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4. This meant that this dream would have to wait.
Itsuno finally went back to his passion project once the Devil May Cry games’ development was finished. Dragon’s Dogma stood out from its contemporaries due to its unusual magic fighting system and the ability to grapple extremely tall enemies, but what really made the game a fan favorite was its Pawn System. Itsuno developed this unique method in order to maintain the game’s single-player focus while also enabling players to establish connections with one another through sharing the AI companions they build and hone. The production team’s excursions to the United Kingdom provided inspiration for the world’s rolling hills and distinctive architecture as development went on.
Towards the end of the video, Itsuno announced Dragon’s Dogma 2 is in development alongside Daigo Ikeno and Kenichi Suzuki.
More details will be announced in the future. For now, check out the entire 12-minute video.
