Facebook parent company Meta announced a $100 USD price increase for its two Meta Quest 2 versions. Starting August 1st, the 128GB Meta Quest 2 version will go up from $299.99 USD to $399.99 USD. Meanwhile, the 256GB version will go up from $399.99 USD to $499.99 USD. Prices are also expected to go up for MQ2 accessories and refurbished units.
Every new virtual reality headset purchased from August 1 to December 31 will come with an offer to download Beat Saber free of charge. The new devices will have to be activated before January 31, 2023.
While there have been consoles and other platform devices going down in price as time passes, seeing an increase of a device is very unheard of in gaming, especially when a device has been launched for close to two years. For consoles and other gaming devices, prices go up when there are new features included and are released as new models, like the PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X and the Nintendo Switch OLED model.
This step taken by Meta is the opposite of what Nintendo did with its Nintendo 3DS. The Big N lowered the price of the 3DS from $250 to $170 due to weak sales. It helped the Big N tremendously to turn the 3DS a successful gaming device.
Why is Meta increasing the price of the Meta Quest 2? “The costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise. By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to grow our investment in groundbreaking research and new product development that pushes the VR industry to new heights,” says the post.
