Kevin Conroy, the voice of the DC superhero Batman since the early 1990s, passed away at age 66.
The announcement was made by Diane Pershing on her official Facebook page. Pershing worked alongside Conroy in Batman: The Animated Series where she played the role of Poison Ivy.
“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday. He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world. Below are pictures of Kevin with Loren Lester who plays Robin another with me and and Tara Strong who is in the later episodes of Batman cartoons. And then finally, one of Kevin and me in front of the huge audiences we used to get when we did our panels. RIP, friend.“
Tara Strong, voice actress who worked alongside Conroy, shared her thoughts about his passing: “I don’t have the words. Not today. My heart is broken. There will never be another. He IS #Batman. #RPILEGEND.”
Mark Hamill, who played the voice of The Joker, shared his feelings about Kevin:
“Stunned by the loss of this brilliant actor. Words can’t express my admiration and respect for the man. I loved him like a brother. RIPKevinConroy 💔”
After his work in Batman: The Animated Series, he continued playing the same dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman in The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and others. He brought the voice of both characters to video games as well.
In a post shared by DC Comics, Mark Hamill said: “Kevin was a brilliant actor. For several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones, and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.”
Conroy also played the role of Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event.
“DC is deeply saddened at the passing of Kevin Conroy, a legendary actor and the voice of Batman for multiple generations. He will be forever missed by his friends, family, and fans. Forever our Batman,” says an email sent to DC fans.
Thanks for everything, Kevin.
