Just over a decade ago here in the US, when Netscape Navigator was the favorite software to surf online, many cyber users used the AOL internet service through the use of the phone lines. Back then, America On-Line had an enormous clientele of over 20 million users connected to their networks. The net connections we now know as “broadband” were only available at businesses and universities in the mid 90’s, but everything has changed now.

Many customers have left AOL because DSL and broadband services are already available at affordable prices. Netscape retired from the browser war, leaving its son Firefox in the competition against Internet Explorer. The same could be said about internet through the phone lines. Generally, EarthLink offers the same service as AOL, company that merged with Time Warner. By the way, AOL bought Netscape in 1998. It’s no secret Time Warner wants to get rid of its internet services, nor it’s a secret other companies have already been interested in buying or merging with AOL. Even Google has bought 5% of AOL valued at $1 billion.

EarthLink has been in the competition for many years. Now it’s thinking about merging with AOL dial-up services, even though it has had some problems previously. Last year, the company reduced the number of its employees to less than half. Also, it suspended its plans of municipal Wi-Fi service in some cities. Mr. Huff, chief executive at EarthLink, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that merging EarthLink and AOL’s net services would create a better service. Of course, this would increase the number of clients for EarthLink. The company already offers high-speed DSL, cable and satellite internet services.

Without a doubt, this is the best opportunity AOL has in order to separate itself from its dial-up net services once and for all. EarthLink already offers high-speed net services. Now, it seems like what’s left is to convince their users to make the transition to high-speed and then do the same with AOL clients as soon as EarthLink gets them.
