Google Chrome: The operating system | El sistema operativo

Google started simply as a search engine many years ago, yet now we depend on it for lots of things we net users do online such as email (Gmail), blogging (Blogspot), video-sharing (YouTube), Google Maps, the Chrome web browser and lots more. In the near future, people may not just use Windows as their OS when it comes to netbooks thanks to Google.

Google announced yesterday on its blog it is currently working on a lightweight & open-source operating system, based on its Chrome web browser, to be used initially with netbook computers. According to the posted message, this new Linux-based OS will be different than others in some ways. Their applications will run online and be able to work offline. It seems like they are incorporating two of its main applications into Linux: the Chrome web browser and Gears.

The blog says: “The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.”

Now there is a list of computer software and hardware companies who will be working with Google in order to make this a reality. The list wasn’t available yesterday when Google posted the info about its OS. Some of the companies working with Google in the Chrome OS are Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP, Texas Instruments. The one missing is Dell.

With Google already working on an OS, will this become an anti-trust issue the US government would pay lots of attention to? It seems highly unlikely at this point because the operating system is being done for just netbooks. But the Google Chrome OS could be a great option for users who use work on the net a lot. Perhaps for some users, using a single operating system will become a thing of the past. Is that one of Google’s goals as well?
