[EN]: The top movie rental company will soon say au revoir to all of its 300 remaining stores in the United States in January 2014. Its parent company, Dish Network, made the announcement tonight. After the movie rental services made it online by the name of Netflix, customers seem to have lost interest about going to a place specifically about just renting movies.

The closing of the retail stores will also affect the DVD-by-mail service, closing in mid-December. At least, we will still hear the Blockbuster name with Dish Networks’ Blockbuster @Home and Blockbuster on Demand services.

Though some gamers would still love to go and rent some games and films, services such as Redbox (with automated kiosks at retail stores and gas stations) and GameFly (DVD-by-mail with a monthly subscription) also changed the way people want to get entertainment, by offering different business models.

The quality of videos seen online via Netflix and many other services may not equal the high-quality we see when we put a DVD or Blu-Ray disc on a player, since the quality does depend on our internet connection speeds. Also with Netflix, there is no language or subtitle selection, something very important for anime fans (like me) and people not fluent in English, or extra DVD content with Netflix.

The closing of retail Blockbuster Video stores does not mean the end of the big-store movie rental industry as we know it, but it does show that if a company does not adapt to new ways of delivery content and does not change its business model on time, things won’t look good in the near future.
