Nintendo has continued to dominate the Japanese gaming market in 2020 with the Nintendo Switch as it accounts for 87% of all consoles sold.
According to Famitsu via GamesIndustry.biz, the regular Nintendo Switch sold 3.9 million units. The Switch Lite sold 2.95 million units. For Nintendo, it’s a 30% increase when compared to Nintendo console sales in 2019.
The PlayStation 4 takes second place with 543,000 units sold, followed by the PlayStation 5 at 255,000 units. Next is the Nintendo 3DS with 62,761 units. Xbox Series X/S take last place with just 31,424 units sold.
As for software, Animal Crossing: New Horizons become the highest-selling video game in Japan last year with 6,378,103 physical units sold. Ring Fit Adventures landed in second place with close to 1.6 million units.
Out of the top ten titles sold in Japan in 2020, Minecraft: Switch Edition (556,982 units / 8th place), Final Fantasy VII: Remake (949,379 units / 4th place), and Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa Heisei Reiwa mo Teiban (1,233,023 units / 3rd place) were the only non-Nintendo published titles.
