According to a Bloomberg report, Nintendo is planning to release a new Nintendo Switch model featuring a 7-inch Samsung OLED display along with 4K graphics when in TV mode.
The 720p OLED display provided by Samsung is a less costly alternative. The price for rigid OLED panels have been going down “due to excess supply.”
The new screen size will be one noticeable difference. The original Switch features a 6.2-inch screen while the Switch Lite a 5.5-inch screen.
The new Switch may feature a “thinner bezel.”
If Bloomberg’s report becomes a reality, the upcoming Switch model will benefit Samsung (getting a recognized client such as Nintendo).
For Nintendo, this strategy could help the company with more sales while Microsoft and Sony face semiconductor shortages for their newer consoles.
“The OLED panel will consume less battery, offer higher contrast and possibly faster response time when compared to the Switch’s current liquid-crystal display,” Yoshio Tamura, co-founder of display consultancy DSCC, told Bloomberg.
As for the reason Nintendo picked rigid OLED panels: it’s “a cheaper but less flexible alternative to the type commonly used for high-end smartphones.”
