According to Bloomberg, Amazon has cancelled The Lord of the Rings MMORPG it announced back in 2019.
It is yet another stumbling block for Amazon’s gaming division trying to launch a title.
Sources told Bloomberg the cause of the cancellation is due to “a dispute between Amazon and Tencent that eventually caused the game’s cancellation.” Amazon Game Studios was working with Leyou Technologies Holdings, a company Tencent purchased last December.
A spokesperson representing Amazon told Bloomberg its gaming division has been “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time” since Tencent purchased Leyou.
“We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers,” said the Amazon spokesperson.
This is Amazon’s third unsuccessful game project following the cancellations of Breakaway and Crucible. Amazon is still working on New World.
