Amazon announced today a new Amazon Prime price increase for subscribers in the US, with the annual fee going up from $119 to $139.
According to the company, there are two reasons for the new price, the fourth one since the service started out in 2005.
Amazon indicated the latest price increase is due to its “continued expansion of Prime member benefits as well as the rise in wages and transportation costs.”
The monthly price has also been affected, going up from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month.
The new price for current members starts after March 25, “on the date of their next renewal.” For new members, the new price starts on February 18.
The company also mentioned it has invested heavily in content for Prime subscribers, which includes sports, movies, series, games, music, pharmacy and faster shipping services.
This price increase comes just a few weeks after Netflix announced its own price increase.
Amazon Prime started out in 2005 with a $79 yearly subscription. The yearly subscription went up to $99 in 2014 and to $119 in 2018.
