Former Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé told Inverse that Nintendo was working on a adaptive controller that could be used with the latest game consoles.
According to Fils-Aimé, Nintendo was developing this multiplatform controller in 2019 as “part of an industry-wide initiative” after Xbox released its Xbox Adaptive Controller in 2018. For Nintendo, the Xbox Adaptive Controller was seen “as a jumping-off point to create something that would be platform-agnostic and adaptable by any consumer.”
“Imagine an adaptive controller that you could play with your latest Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platform. That’s what we were working on three years ago,” Fils-Aimé said.
Because Fils-Aimé left Nintendo in 2019, he doesn’t know if the company continues to work on that controller. “My hope is that the effort has continued. I’m not sure if it has or has not. But also, my hope is that controller — and the ability for that controller to connect with all of the various systems — is launched and shared with consumers as quickly as possible.”
