Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has launched a new YouTube channel about game design and development.
With decades of experience in the field of gaming, Sakurai will share his knowledge and know-how.
Sakurai hasn’t been satisfied with talking at conferences such as GDC. “I’ve also realized that developer conferences like GDC or CEDEC, while good for technical concepts, aren’t always the best forums for discussing game design theory.”
As seen on his new YT channel, Sakurai wants to help people without any experience in game development and to show everyone interested (including aspiring game creators) “a small glimpse into what this world is like.” He feels he can reach a higher audience with YouTube than publishing a book, attending a conference or with lectures. He won’t focus much on the technical aspects. His videos will last between 2 and 5 minutes.
According to Sakurai, there will be two versions of each video, one in English and one in Japanese.
Also, Sakurai stated that Nintendo is not involved in his brand-new channel. “Please understand this is my own personal project.” He clearly mentioned he is not trying to make a profit out of this, and that he won’t be setting up ads.
Overall, he wants people to “make games more fun.”
