Cygrus Entertainment founders Roberta and Ken Williams announced today the arrival of Colossal Cave – Reimagined by Roberta Williams for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
According to the Sierra On-Line founders, Colossal Cave is a “3D interpretation of the original text adventure title.”
The game, originally developed by William Crowther, made its debut in 1976 for the PDP-10 mainframe computer. Don Woods expanded the game a year later.
Colossal Cave inspired titles that came years later such as Zork, Rogue, and Adventure, and started the interactive fiction genre.
“Colossal Cave – Reimagined by Roberta Williams will soon be available to all gamers worldwide on every major platform,” said Ken Williams, founder and CEO, Cygnus Entertainment. “This is a moment of pride and excitement from our hard-working team and we look forward to bringing the fiery spirit of adventure to devoted fans and new explorers in the near future.”
The title is also coming to Nintendo Switch, Meta Quest 2, and Windows (via Epic Games Store).
Roberta Williams created the King’s Quest series as well as other popular adventure titles.
This new version pays homage to the original game (playable here), which is considered one of the most influential titles in the history of video games.
Here’s a brief description of the game: “In the game, players explore a vast and extensive cave, seeking treasures within. Along the way, they will encounter a variety of characters, some of whom will attack and some of whom will entertain. For instance, there is a Troll (at the troll bridge), a bear, a snake, dwarves (seven, of course), and a pirate. The player’s quest is to find all the treasure. The challenge is not easy, and there will be a wide variety of puzzles to overcome.”
Roberta and Ken received the Industry Icon award at The Game Awards in 2014 and the Pioneer Award at the GDC 2020.
They both got to speak at the Day of the Devs 10th Anniversary Indie Game Showcase 2022.
