As Google prepares to shut down Stadia on January 18, it released today the Google Stadia Controller Bluetooth support tool that will allow owners to use the device as a Bluetooth controller.
That way, even after the cloud gaming service gets discontinued, the controller won’t be completely worthless.
Once the installation is completed, it will disable the Stadia Controller’s existing proprietary Wi-Fi connection and enable Bluetooth Low Energy connections instead (Bluetooth LE). After the installation, users will be able to pair the controller to a Bluetooth LE-compatible device by simultaneously pushing the Stadia and Y buttons for two seconds until the status light flashes orange.
Players who want to enjoy Stadia will have to wait until the service reaches its end at 11:59 PM Pacific time on January 18. The update will permanently disable the Wi-Fi connectivity on the controller.
“Once you switch your controller to Bluetooth mode, you can’t change it back to use Wi-Fi on Stadia. You can still play wired with USB in Bluetooth mode.”
Stadians will be able to make the Bluetooth update until December 31, 2023.
