IGN Entertainment has acquired digital media company Gamer Network, company in charge of various publications such as Eurogamer, VG247, GamesIndustry.biz, Rock Paper Shotgun, and other websites, for an undisclosed amount.
The mentioned publisher also holds shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry and Hookshot (in charge of Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox and Time Extension).
An article on website GamesIndustry.biz says “some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation” because of the acquisition.
Editors at GamesIndustry.biz and Rock Paper Shotgun have been laid off, according to posts on X (formerly Twitter).
“Guess who has two thumbs and is being made redundant following my company getting new owners,” said Alice Bell, now former deputy editor at RPS.
“Hello folks, I’ve unfortunately have been laid off from @GIBiz. I’m fine really,” said Jeffrey Rousseau, now-former staff writer at GamesIndustry.biz.
“If you are just hearing about (or have heard about) the Gamer Network acquisition, I’m part of the cut group,” said Stephany Nunneley-Jackson, now-former Senior News Editor at VG247.
“GamesIndustry.biz managing editor Brendan Sinclair has been laid off,” Senior Reporter Ethan Gach at Kotaku mentioned.
Currently, IGN Entertainment, a ZiffDavis division, owns IGN, Humble Bundle, MapGenie, and HowLongToBeat. The UK-based events EGX and MCM, along with the digital brand Popverse, are not part of the sale and will continue to be owned by ReedPop.
ReedPop already had plans to sell Gamer Network since late 2023.
The announcement comes at a time of changes in various industries due to the arrival of artificial intelligence and current economic conditions (including over expenses during the COVID pandemic). Last year, Kotaku shut down its Spanish-language team, replacing its writers with AI translation.
