Just this morning, Redbox announced an upcoming increase in the cost of rent of movies and video games. It is the company’s second price increase in 12 years, the first one for Blu-Ray and game discs.
According to an email sent to its customers, the price will increase as follows:
- From $1.20 to $1.50 for each DVD per day, starting December 2nd
- From $1.50 to $2.00 for each Blu-Ray per day, starting December 2nd
- From $2.00 to $3.00 for each video game per day, starting January 6th, 2015
The prices may be different in certain areas.
Redbox’s email also states the following: “We know that hearing about a price increase isn’t the best news, but we feel it’s necessary in order to improve your Redbox experience, while continuing to deliver the best value for new movies and games.”
The company started renting video games in June 2011. Last month, it discontinued its Redbox Instant by Verizon service after only 19 months.
