Minecraft is going where no Minecraft game has been released before, the arcade, with Minecraft Dungeons Arcade.
The recently-announced four-player co-op game is coming to arcades thanks to Mojang Studios and US arcade game company Play Mechanix.
It’s the second title Play Mechanix is working on with Microsoft. Previously, Play Mechanix worked on the 2018 arcade game Halo: Fireteam Raven.
According to a post on Minecraft.net, a small number of Minecraft Dungeons Arcade cabinets are being spread throughout North America for testing. More cabinets will be released this year.
“If you take a step back, you can see the similarities between the two, but when you take a step into [a consumer] game, it’s like a waltz,” said Will Carlin, creative director at Play Mechanix. “An arcade game on the other hand is some kind of super break-dancing speed experience – it’s about intensity of the moment, and surviving as long as possible – an intense burst of fun!”
Minecraft Dungeons Arcade features nine levels to play. In order to continue through the game, players can use physical cards to save their progress. While controlling a character, players can make use of Melee, Dodge, and Range.
“When you play the game, you collect gems and [defeat enemies], which fills your card meter,” Will mentioned. “Once card meters are full, they activate, and you can use them to defeat enemies all around you. Every time you play the game, a card will be given that is yours to keep.”
Players will be able to collect 60 cards. Each player will be able to scan up to five cards per gaming session.
