At the 23rd Annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCAs), Elden Ring, the renowned action role-playing game created by game director Hidetaka Miyazaki and fantasy writer George R. R. Martin, has received the Game of the Year award. Elden Ring not only won the Game of the Year award, but it also claimed the top prizes in the Best Design and Best Visual Arts categories. The GDCA ceremony was held as part of the 2023 Game Developers Conference (GDC) which took place at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.
Also, the GDCA presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to John Romero, a trailblazer in the first-person shooter genre and the creator of the highly popular multiplayer mode “Deathmatch.” Romero’s innovative work on games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake have left an indelible mark on the industry. In addition, this year’s Pioneer Award was given posthumously to Mabel Addis, widely acknowledged as the first female video game designer. Addis designed The Sumerian Game for the IBM 7090 in 1964. Her grandson, Erik Johnson, accepted the award on her behalf.
