Before we got to see Mario save the Princess, before we got to see Link fight against Gannon, and even before we got to see Ryu and Ken fight with their hadoukens or shoryukens, we were able to simply runaway from ghosts (or eat them when posilble) to survive while eating all those dots. We didn’t want to get caught by Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, but after 30 years, the simplicity of the game still hunts us in our TVs, PCs, mobile devices and for some more hours on google.com, the way the ghosts chase Pac-Man.
Pac-Man was the very first game to generate an enormous popularity among genders and age groups. It was no space game, the type of game most males used to play. It was the type of game even one’s aunt or grandma would play. Only a few games have reached this feat. Pac-Man was the original videogame to boldly go where no game had gone before (i.e. Saturday morning cartoon, a top 10 song, cereals, lunch boxes, etc, etc, etc).
To remember the good old days of the arcade games, Google posted a full version of a Pac-Man game. You may have been lucky if your manager at work hasn’t see Pac-Man in the Google search home page (or maybe he/she did see it but was playing the game without your knowledge).
Anyway, Pac-Man became a prime example of how games can impact society. Thirty years ago, people used to play the game wherever they could to simply kill boredom. It was and still is a great medicine for such state of mind. Today, we play it on our iPods or other phones.
For now, enjoy the Google version of Pac-Man while you still can. It won’t stay on Google for long. Hint: Press “Insert Coin” twice to play as Ms. Pac-Man in 2-player game mode. Now, if I could taste a piece of Pac-man’s cake again (I had some during Pac-man’s 25th anniverary party at E3 2005 ).
