From Netflix, Qwikster is born: Netflix to offer TV and movies via online only, and Qwikster by mail

After the recent loss of a million customers due to the increase in the cost of its services, Netflix has just posted an unexpected announcement for many.
Via the company’s blog, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings surprised everyone in a big way: the separation in the ways ways Netflix offers movies and TV shows.
In a few weeks, Netflix will only offer movies over the Internet, while the new sister company Qwikster will be in charge of mailing movies and other programs on DVD that customers want to see. In addition, Qwikster will be Blockbuster and GameFly’s newest competitor in the business of renting video games by mail.
For many people, perhaps this radical change gets to disappoint them, but Hastings explained in detail why:
So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”.
There is still no starting date for Qwikster, but the web site is already available with an image saying the service will be launched

Tras la pérdida reciente de un millón de clientes debido al aumento en el costo de sus servicios, la empresa Netflix acaba de dar un anuncio inesperado por varios.
Por medio del blog de la empresa, el presidente ejecutivo de Netflix, Reed Hastings, dio una gran sorpresa: la separación de las maneras en que Netflix ofrece películas y programas de televisión.
En unas pocas semanas, Netflix se encargará solamente en ofrecer películas por Internet, mientras que la nueva empresa hermana Qwikster se encargará de mandar por correo las películas y otros programas en DVD que sus clientes deseen ver. Además, Qwikster será el nuevo competidor de Blockbuster y GameFly en el alquiler o renta de videojuegos por correo.
Para muchas personas, este cambio radical quizá los desilucione, pero Hastings explica en detalle el porqué:
Así que nos dimos cuenta de que el ’streaming’ (distribución continua de audio y video) y los DVD por correo se están convirtiendo en dos negocios muy diferentes, con estructuras de costos muy diferentes, con diferentes beneficios que deben ser comercializados de maneras diferentes, y tenemos que dejar que cada uno cresca y funcione de manera independiente. Es difícil para mí escribir esto después de más de 10 años de mandar los DVD por correo con orgullo, pero creemos que es necesario y lo mejor: Dentro de pocas semanas, vamos a cambiar el nombre de nuestro servicio de DVD por correo a Qwikster.
Aún no hay una fecha de lanzamiento oficial de Qwikster, pero el sitio web ya está disponible con una imágen de que el servició será lanzado pronto.
