[EN]: Sony Computer Entertainment has made its plan to acquire Gaikai official today. SCE will buy all of Gaikai, Inc. for about $380 million.
While OnLive, a competing company in cloud gaming, is already offering its own service to gamers in different platforms, Gaikai’s game demos (for EA and other companies) have been mostly offered via browsers on Windows computers, but with today’s acquisition of Gaikai, Sony will have to decide how it would open up services to platforms besides its PS3, PSP, and PS Vita.
OnLive already offers cloud gaming on computers and in Android devices, and a viewer on iPod and iPad ones.
For Sony, Gaikai could provide access to game demos without having to download lots of gigabytes that eventually get to fill a user’s hard drive, though the service does requires continuous, high-speed access to the Internet.
It could let people play PS3 games on Android-based smartphones.
During E3 2012, I asked one of the Gaikai representatives about the service, and he said it can be applied into any platform.
Now that Sony will own Gaikai, will we see radical changes in the development of Sony console games in the near future? Will Sony’s PS4 be the company’s last physical console?
