PlayStation 4 Controller

[EN]: Because of the types of architecture used on the PS3 and the upcoming PS4 console, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida says PSN titles you currently play on your PS3 will not make it to its next-generation console. There are already many fans who are disappointed by the lack of native backward compatibility; we have been able to play PS1 games on the PS2, and the PS3’s early models had hardware- and software-based backward compatibility, though it was removed eventually. The PS3 uses Power-PC architecture and the PS4 one will use one based on x86. In computers, there are applications such as QEMU that provide hardware virtualization. But if the PS4 will be an x number of times more powerful than the PS3, why can’t the PS4 do it?

Without native backward compatibility (aka playing PS3 games on the PS4 without the need of the upcoming Sony’s Gaikai online service), Sony could receive an uppercut from Microsoft if the next Xbox console indeed becomes backward compatiblew with the Xbox 360. PS1 and PS2 games should at least be playable natively on the PS4.

Perhaps players will think twice before getting a PS3 or a PSN game next time this year.
