After becoming one of the first web sites to make the transition from simply text to video-based game journalism and media, the website GameTrailer is shutting down after thirteen years.
The unfortunate news for many arrived via Facebook and Twitter.
GameTrailers was the brinachild of Geoff Brots and Brandon Jones, who founded the website back in 2002. In 2005, the site wa sold to MTV Networks., but it was the purchase of the site by Defy Media that caused the firing of many senior members from GameTrailers, about 2/3 of all the full-time staff.
So far, Defy Media has not shared via its website the reason of the shutdown, but the company still owns one game-related property: The Escapist aka Escapist Magazine.
The post on Facebook says a lot about the site: “When GameTrailers was founded in 2002, internet video was a revolutionary concept. YouTube wouldn’t be founded for another three years; consumer live streaming was nine years away.”
Farewell, GameTrailers.
