As Riven, the sequel of the adventure game Myst, turns 25, game developer Cyan announced it is working on a modern Riven remake.
Via the Riven remake’s FAQ page, the developer explains why it has taken so long to bring the game back.
“Riven is one of the most highly regarded games in Cyan’s history. We didn’t want to approach it lightly or frivolously. Cyan is a small indie studio. We wanted to make sure we could take on such a difficult, costly and complicated endeavor – and do it well.”
The main reason for the remake started with a community group called “The Starry Expanse Project” some 13 years ago. The goal of that group: to create “the faithful recreation of Riven in a fully-realized realtime-3D environment.”
The group began most of its attempts to remake Riven from scratch, motivated by the ambition to bring Riven to life once again.
It was only two years ago when Cyan talked to the Starry Expanse team. Both reached an agreement that allows Cyan to use key components of the initiatives Starry Expanse started to accelerate the project. Starry Expanse ceased development of its work as Cyan got to start officially on the remake.
“So for the first time publicly, we are happy to report that our effort to remake Riven officially here at Cyan is alive and well, and it was helped by the Starry Expanse team’s years of effort, enabling us to begin the huge task of rebuilding Riven from scratch. With a very focused development team here at Cyan, Riven is well on its way to being reborn!”
Cyan didn’t announce the platforms the game will be arriving on.
