Microsoft announced that carbon aware power mode will be coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles very soon.
According to Microsoft, “being carbon aware means reducing carbon footprint by optimizing updates and downloads to run at a time when the console can use the most renewable energy.”
Windows Update for Windows 11 PCs already are carbon aware since last year. Currently, Xbox Insiders are testing the feature. For Xbox owners, the feature will be available soon.
The Xbox will plan game, app, and OS updates for times of the day when the electric grid is using more renewable sources of energy, such solar, wind, or hydropower.
“For example, instead of your Xbox waking up during the nightly maintenance window at a random time between 2:00 AM – 6:00 AM, your console will wake up at a time when it can use the most renewable energy in your local energy grid.”
The performance, gameplay, or ability of your console to receive overnight updates to its operating system, games, or applications will not be impacted by this one-time update to your power settings.
“This decreases fossil fuel dependency and CO2 emissions, and could potentially save you money.”
