The Super Mario Bros. animated film starring the Nintendo mascot has made over $500 million at the box office in less than a month, making it the first video game adaptation to accomplish that remarkable feat.
In its first five days of release, the April 5 premiere of the Nintendo and Illumination movie brought in more than $204 million domestically, $146 million of which came over the typical Friday-Sunday period.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the second-highest domestic three-day opening of any animated film, behind The Incredibles 2’s $182 million, thanks to these amazing numbers.
The movie performed even better abroad, surpassing Frozen 2’s previous record of $358 million to become the greatest global animated movie opening of all time with $377 million over the course of five days.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie surpasses Disney and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which was a bit of a letdown for the superhero franchise juggernaut, as the largest release of 2023 to date.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie now has the largest opening in the history of the Universal-owned animation studio, Illumination, which has previously developed the blockbusters Despicable Me and Minions.
